![]() Potential energy is stored energy of position. Some examples of kinetic energy are electrical energy (motion of charges in a current), thermal energy (motion of microscopic particles), sound (motion of particles in waves), and light (motion of photons on waves of radiation) energy. Kinetic energy is the energy which an object possesses due to its motion. ![]() Overall, there are two main categories that divide energy: kinetic and potential. Gravitational energy (J) = Weight (N) x Height (m)Įnergy is the ability to do work. It may rise in the Earth’s gravitational field (gain in gravitational potential energy). It may store the energy for later use (gain in potential energy). Its temperature may rise (gain in thermal energy). Its speed may increase (gain in kinetic energy). It may, in turn, do work on another object.Simply reduced, there are five alternatives: When work is done on an object, there are various things that could happen. The person could have exerted enormous amount of force, however because of the object’s mass and friction from the carpet, there is no work as there was no displacement covered from the original location. Another scenario could be that the object was extremely heavy. There is no directional force, therefore, no work. This makes sense as well, since if one of the values is 0, that means that the force trying to move an object was not giving any effort s/he must have simply left the object alone. If either of those values is 0, then of course there is no work. If the force exerted is positive, then the final work will be positive. If the force exerted is negative, then the final work will be negative. Logically following that statement, because the value of the distance can never be less than 0, the value of work mostly depends on the force value. Work (measured in Joules) = force (measured in Newtons) multiplied by distance (which is measured in meters). It follows the equation of work, which states that W = f x d. Work is the action of a force to cause displacement of an object. The most important three were work, energy, and power. For this project, there were a few key concepts that I needed to know before I could get started.
